Phylum Notes
Phylum Arthropoda
"Jointed legs"
General Characteristics
-The largest phylum (75% of all animals)
-Terrestrial
General Morphology (Study of Structure)
Exoskeleton: Outside, made of chitin
-Protection, attachment of muscles, support
-Molt: Sheds exoskeleton as grows (ecdysis)
Chitin
What is chitin?
- A polysaccharide (sugar) that is the principal component of the exoskeleton
-Body segmented; bilateral symmetry
-Jointed appendages
-Dioecious-seperate males and females
Types
Insects-750,00+sp
-Rare in SW; salt marshes (flies, mosquitos)
Class Crustaceans-Crab, shrimp, lobster
-Mostly saltwater
-Two pairs of segmented antennae, 4-6 mouth parts
-Have gills to get oxygen
-Appendages specialized for crawling , swimming, mating, feeding
-Many have a carapace (hard covering over thoroax)
Order Cladocera-"Water fleas"
-Zooplankton
-C-shaped, with appendages, one large compound eye
Order Ostracoda-"Water shrimp"
Zooplankton
Order Copepods
Order Cirrepedia
"Barnacles"
-Sessile in adult stage, some are parasitic
-Plankton feeder
-Lie on back with plates
Order Decapoda
-Crabs, prawns, shrimp, lobster
-Stalked eyes on head
-ten legs
-Commonly have a carapace
-Body typically has 19 segments
Order Amphipoda
-Bilaterally compressed- 13 segments and no carapace
-Back legs, extremely long
Order Isopoda
-Flattened or depressed body from top to bottom
